Banned Books Week 2011

Banned Books Week Image

Banned Books Week ImageLiterary Obsession will be participating in Banned Books Week again this year!

Thanks to Kathy from I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Jen from I Read Banned Books, there’s a pretty huge blog hop going on linking all the blogs that are participating.  I’m definitely proud to include my blog on this list, because I certainly do NOT support the banning of books and I think this is a great way to spread the word about some great challenged and banned titles.

If you’d like more information about Banned Books, please visit these links:
The American Library Association
BannedBooksWeek.org

Here at Literary Obsession, I’ll be giving away 1 box set of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins in Hardcover format, 1 copy of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (paperback), and 1 book from the 2010-2011 challenged books list chosen by my dear hubby who hates the thought of banning books just as much as I do.  I’ll draw three winners; the first winner gets to choose his or her prize, the second winner chooses from the other two, and the third winner gets the remaining book.

My giveaway is INTERNATIONAL to any country on BookDepository.com’s ship-to list.

Be sure to take a moment (or, well, a lot of moments, this list is long!) to enter the other giveaways on the hop.  There’s a ton of great books available!

(If you cannot see the Rafflecopter entry form or the linky blog list, refresh the page by pushing ctrl-r or command-r.)

Don’t forget to check out the other blogs participating in the hop!

I have only read Betrayed by P.C & Kristin Cast from the list. I like it and the others in the series mostly but since the series has gone to multi POV I don’t like it as much.

I’ve read some P.C. Cast books. They’re not my faves, but certainly not worthy of banning. That’s the beauty of it – everyone has the right to choose, and no one should think they can make the decisions for anyone else. 🙂

I’ve read both the Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series; they’re all banned books and I loved them anyway! I enjoyed HP as a kid and now that I’m a teenager, I love the series just as much and I think it has probably helped me more than it has done me harm. The same goes for THG, which I really got into last year 🙂

Thanks for commenting, Felicia! I love hearing from teenagers who love to read. Reading was one of my fave things to do as a youngling. 🙂 I actually began reading Harry Potter in my 20s, and I’m not afraid to admit that I loved (and still love!) the series.

My favorite is Lord of the rings. And i would like to read the vampire academy serie by Richelle mead ( so wining one i don’t have would be wonderful)- i don’t see why it’s banned

thanks for this international giveaway

You’re quite welcome for it being international! 🙂 You know, much to my husband’s dismay, I have not actually read Lord of the Rings. I’ve just seen the movies…shame on me! I suppose I’ll have to rectify that, soon.

I have read Harry Potter and I can not believe that series is banned!!! Right now I want to read The Hunger Games BEFORE the movie comes out. Why is this banned anyway? :S

Thanks for making your amazing giveaway intenational 🙂 fingers crossed!

OMG you are giving away the set of The Hungers Games….HB!!!!! I tought it was just the 1st. book lol oooh man I hope I win!!! Thanks again.

Yep, the whole set! I do loathe only owning the first book in a series. 🙂 Hubby and I decided that it only made sense to give the whole set to someone, so a lucky person will get a brand spanking sparkly new hardback set of their very own! Thanks for entering! 🙂

I’ve read the VA series by Richelle Mead and HP series by J.K. Rowling. Both series are absolutely amazing and I can’t even begin to understand how someone can ban them.
I’m looking forward to reading the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins before the movie comes out
(I recently found out that the trilogy is in the banned list, too and I was shocked because I’ve read so many great reviews of the books).

Quite a few books on the list made me shake my head and laugh a bit. I don’t support the banning of any on the list, but there are some that seem even sillier to ban than others. It’s people acting rashly out of ignorance and some strange sense of fear.

I’ve read Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. I love both series and can’t see why people would want to ban/challenge the books.

Harry Potter, unless I am mistaken, was challenged for religious reasons. My opinion on that is: if what you are teaching your children makes sense to them, and that child is at peace with those teachings, then you shouldn’t fear. But some folks don’t like their children to think for themselves, they want blind faith. At any rate…Harry Potter just doesn’t seem all that intimidating to me. It’s a story about life and death. It’s a story about good defeating evil. What’s wrong with that?

I’m actually surprised just how many “banned books” I’ve read… and most of them were for school reading assignments, apparently before people got overly sensitive about subject matter. I think I read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn at least 3-4 times for school, never would’ve thought that was a banned book until I saw it on the list just now… I mean it’s an American Classic! I count 12 books on the ALA’s banned & challenged classics list that I read for school – Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Color Purple, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, As I Lay Dying, Gone With The Wind, Slaughterhouse-Five, Call of the Wild, Lord of the Rings. I had to laugh when I saw one of the reasons for banning Harry Potter (which I also read for school) was “Satanism”, I mean, seriously?

As far as the 2010-11 list, Hunger Games is on my to-read list, I’ve heard they’re very good. Stolen Children sounds like something I would read… murder mysteries are my favorite genre, and that sounds similar only with kidnapping instead of murder.

I have read Twilight series, Vampire academy series, House of night series and The Lord of The Rings which is my favorite. I recently read the water of elephants, the book is great and I can’t understand why it is in the list.
Thank you for the giveaway!

Brave New World is a must read for anyone, I believe! Of Mice and Men, Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye–also right up there. Those books have shaped so many people and inspired so many incredible authors.

I can’t believe some of the books that are on the “banned” list! I love The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Vampire Academy, Twilight, The Handmaid’s Tale… so many awesome books! Having them banned would be scary. Down with censorship!

I’ve read ,Lords of The Ring, twilight and the vampire academy. Can not understand why would these be in the banned books list ? :S The Hunger Games is on my TBR list.

I’ve read Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games…then classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, The Lord of the Rings,
It’s interesting that the banned books are on the top of Goodreads best book ever list 🙂

I’d like to read One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Perks of Being a Wallflower,
Fahrenheit 451, Water for Elephants

maybe I’ll read some of these books this week to celebrate Banned Book Week 🙂

thanks for the giveaway!

I’ve read the Harry Potter series, the Hunger Games series, the Twilight series, Catcher in the Rye, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and The Great Gatsby. My favorite banned book though is To Kill a Mockingbird.

The Hunger Games is my fav on the list. But there are so many others. None of them deserve to be on the list IMO.

Who banned Harry Potter? Their Eyes Were Watching God is one of my all-time vorafites. I read it in multiple English classes and wrote several papers on it, both in high school and college. It amazes me how society still seeks to limit information. Most of the time, it backfires because banned information is that much more sought after. Banned anything (movies, books, websites, etc.) reinforces that ideas are powerful and can make a difference.

The only banned books I’ve read are the Harry Potter and the Gossip Girl series. Although I didn’t like GG that much, HP is my favorite series!

I have only read The Hunger Games and enjoyed them. I want to read The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney. Thanks for having this giveaway.

I have already read all the Harry Potter and the Twilight series, and I just loved them =) They are my favourites. Haven’t had the chance to read Hunger Games though, and I’m really looking forward to it!

@Tibiux

Hmm well the comment before me says that Harry Potter and Twilight are banned… wow guess I have read those. And I read Speak (per your suggestion) and really liked it. I may try to read more of the books from the banned book list, I hate that this even happens. 🙁

I read a lot of banned books: The Hunger Games, Twilight, Harry Potter…
But my favorite would be The Huner Games!!

Thank you for the kind and international giveaway! =D

I’ve read quite a few books on that list. My favorite would probably be Harry Potter, but books like To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Ask Alice, and A Prayer for Owen Meany were also wonderful reads and each had a significant effect on me as a teenager. There are still many more on the list that I have yet to read and, sadly, it seems more are being added to the list all the time. Thanks for the giveaway!!

I’ve read quite a few on the list. (I’m a rebel and I didn’t even know it!)

My personal collection of banned books includes:
Harry Potter
Hunger Games
Vampire Academy
Lord of the Rings
Great Gatsby
Catcher in the Rye
To Kill a Mockingbird
Twilight
Of Mice and Men

And my personal favorite…The Giver by Lois Lowery. I read it in 5 grade and was so moved I became a reader for life. Please someone tell me how that is a bad thing?

I’ve read the Twighy series and I don’t see how it could be banned or challenged at all but I guess everyone has their reasons but I don’t believe in them. I would love to read The Hunger Games I’ve heard so much about this series and everyone seems to love it!!! Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!!!

I’ve read many banned/challenged books: the Harry potter series, Twilight series, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Diary of Anne Frank etc. My top favorite are the HP series.

Wow, such generosity! Thank you so much! My favorite banned books have got to be the Harry Potter series. Though, I honestly don’t see why it was banned/challenged at all! I also loved Bridge to Terabithia. It made me cry! The movie was also so moving… AnnaSophia Robb is such an amazing actress! The Hunger Games was also an incredible read. I’m so hoping that I will win!

ive generally read most of the new YA books that have been banned. Can’t believe twenty boy summer is banned. for what? i also love the hunger games, twilight, harry potter, to kill a mocking bird. Love em all <3

I’m a pretty conservative reader, so it’s surprising to me how many books that I love are on the banned/challenged list! Some of my favorites are: Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, a Wrinkle in Time, and anything by Shel Silverstein (really? He has something bad in his poems?????) Thanks for doing this!

I have read: for example Harry Potter
I’m shocked to hear (haven’t confirmed it yet) Water for Elephants is on the list.
I would love to read Gossip Girl or Twenty Boy Summer
Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

Oh, which ones have I read? Apparently I’ve read many banned/challenged books without realizing it lol. To name a few: Of Mice and Men, The Color Purple, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Twilight, The Diary of Anne Frank, Blood and Chocolate, The Outsiders, The Pigman, Killing Mr. Griffin, The Face on the Milk Carton, That Was Then This Is Now….the list goes on and on. My favorite is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck!

Some of the ones I read are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (I am looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy), and some of The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling.

I would most like to read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I’ve read good reviews of it in the newspapers and my friend recommended that I read it. Problem is… it’s hard to find a copy in bookstores here! 🙁

I ‘ve read a lot of them so I will name just a few, Of Mice and Men, The Giver, The Grapes Of Wrath, Animal Farm, The Outsiders, The Diary Of Anne Frank, Go Ask Alice, The Hungar Games, The Color Purple…I’m gonna stop there because I could go on and on. lol

When I was in school most of the books on the ALA list were required reading! Can’t imagine not having access to them! Ignorance and fear breed prejudice. Celebrate our right to choose what to read and when to read it. One of my favorite banned books is The Diary of Anne Frank. An important story and one that needs to be told.
Thanks for your generous contribution to the Banned Books Week Giveaway Blog Hop!

I’ve read The Hunger games, Harry Potter, Twilight, His Dark Materials Trilogy and Speak and I have no idea why anyone would want to ban them. I guess the world is not as advanced as it claims to be…. ;.( Great Giveaway!!!

I think my favourite would have to be The Diary of Anne Frank. I read it when I was a young girl and I remember thinking to myself while reading, “Oh gosh I can totally relate!” Anne was a believable protagonist and some parts of the story moved me deeply. Even today, I still re-read the book whenever I’m free and the experience is always different.

Thanks for the giveaway, btw!

I still have a hard tim understanding why “The Diary of Anne Frank” would ever, ever be banned! I adore that book and it’s what prompted me to minor in History with a emphasis on WW2 and the Holocaust. Let’s just say it had a rather profound impact on me!

I have read Of Mice and Men, The Outsiders, The Twilight Saga. I’m sure I’ve read at least a couple more when I was in high school, but that was so long ago I can’t remember. 🙂 My favorite is The Twilight Saga.

jmesparza821(at)gmail(dot)com

My favorite banned books are Harry Potter (it always makes me laugh when I see them on this list!) and The Hunger Games.

Thanks for the giveaway! =)

Thanks for the great giveaway:)

I’ve read the Harry Potter series, Twilight series, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank and a few others. I especially loved the Harry Potter series and The Color Purple:)

Sarah:)

I read the color purple, gone with the wind, diary of anne frank, to kill a mocking bird.
I would love to read hunger games!

Thanks for the giveaway!
